Wax Jackets: Buying New and Looking after Old

12 Feb 2021
From the farmer down the road to the Queen herself, a wax jacket is a staple for every country lover’s wardrobe, allowing us to stylishly brave that British countryside weather.

What is the purpose of waxed jackets?

The wax jacket is an iconic piece of classic British country style and Barbour offers the most versatile and stylish range of British made wax jackets. With a wax cotton shell that is waterproof and provides good insulation, it is great for people who love to venture out even on a rainy day. They are also smart – perfect for those who commute on foot. A wax jacket is an investment, and when looked after can last a lifetime making it a timeless, dependable piece in your country wardrobe.
Note: The Queen is believed to have worn the same Barbour waxed jacket for over 25 years.

When should you wear a waxed jacket?

Waxed jackets are wonderfully versatile as they are practical choice yet look structured and smart, in a rough and ready sort of way. They also have the benefit of iconic status helped in part by celebrity fans and silver screen cameos. Waxed jackets are not confined to the countryside, you are just as likely to see them worn on the urban streets or at a music festival than in a farmers field, and that's why the waxed jacket is so style inclusive. It transcends culture, geography and social status, and is simply a style symbol in it's own right.

Cleaning Your Wax Jacket

Step 1

When mud and dirt has dried on your wax jacket, use a dry brush (with soft bristles) to brush off the worst of the mud and dirt. Make sure to double check cuffs, buckles and poppers for trapped dirt.

Step 2

With a damp sponge and cold water wipe down the jacket to remove any last traces of dirt, taking care not to get your jacket too wet and risk oversaturating it.
Tip: Do not use hot water or soap and never machine wash your wax jacket as this will damage it and remove the wax proofing.

Step 3

Airdry your jacket away from any artificial sources of heat.
