A Guide to Layering for the Outdoors

As the days grow shorter and colder, we all want to make the most of the dwindling daylight and explore the beautiful outdoors to witness some of the most amazing winter spectacles. Our walks are filled with amazing sights you can only catch a glimpse of at this time of year. We are watching fleeing foxes, the turning on of the Christmas lights or even just taking the time to admire a frosty sunset. Whatever you are doing outside this winter, you need to make sure that you stay warm when you are out and about.

Cosy at the Core

A Good Base Layer

A thermal top is an ideal base layer that will provide a warm layer of protection close to your body. Available in both men and ladies, the Icebreaker Oasis long sleeved crew, is a versatile base layer that provides both comfort and protection.

A Cosy Fleece

For especially bleak winter days, you can always rely on Schöffel’s Cottesmore Fleece Jacket II for men or their Tilton Quarter Zip Fleece for ladies to keep you cosy. For a milder but crisp day a fleece Gilet like the Oakam Fleece Gilet for men or Lyndon Fleece Gilet for ladies is the perfect layering piece.

A Waterproof Jacket

Waterproof jackets should be dependable. The Schöffel Snipe II coat is insulated and completely waterproof, windproof and highly breathable, a coat you can rely on. For ladies, the modern and stylish Dubarry Bunratty coat is waterproof and lightweight, the perfect companion for getting unexpectedly caught in winter weather.

Head, Shoulders, Hands and Toes

Hats and Headbands

Add a country twist with a Laksen Balmoral Tweed Cap that is strong enough to handle the punishment of a typical winter’s day. The Dubarry Foley Headband is knitted with a cosy fleece lining, this will give you warmth and protection without the risk of hat hair!

Scarves

Not only are scarves an ideal way to change up your outfits, but they are great for keeping your neck warm against howling winds and nippy frosts. A cashmere scarf is eight times warmer than a wool scarf and here at A∙Hume we have cashmere scarves for both men and ladies, in a range of colours that will be sure to keep you cosy.

Gloves

Don’t let your fingers fend for themselves, mittens are a good glove alternative. For men, the Laksen Vienna mittens are not only wind and waterproof, but they also have a magnetic clamp so you can quickly quickly pop out your fingers to use your smartphone. Our new brand Celtic & Co offer ladies Sheepskin Mitts with a playful style that are plush and made from luxury wool.

Socks

Your feet are usually the first thing to get cold on a walk, trusty Panthrella socks for both men and ladies offer luxury level comfort in a range of gorgeous colours, patterns, materials and styles. Whether cashmere or merino wool, your toes will thank you for keeping them toasty. Top tip from A∙Hume: If you still feel a nip on your nose, a quick dram has always done the job for us.
